1996 US Champion and Grandmaster of the Year Alex Yermolinsky adds another title to his collection: the 1997 US Open. Check our US Open Feature Section for a full report, including the final crosstable and reports from the annual meeting.

With the Open out of the way, it's time for the 1997 Interplay US Chess Championships. You'll find player bios, an explanation of the format, and feature articles in our special section. We'll also have games as the event gets underway. GM Michael Rohde will provide special commentary during the SemiFinals and Finals stages of the tournament. While the best of the best are playing, the fans should enjoy quite a show.

If you're one of those who have been writing asking when the catalog would be online, take heart: you can now purchase clocks, sets, boards, and specials in our USCF Webstore. More inventory will be added in the coming weeks. And of course you can also order or renew USCF memberships in the store as well, or by calling our toll-free number at 1-800-388-KING.

Don't forget to check the Updates Page each week to see just what we've added.

    Until next time

1997 Smith & Williamson British Championship

Four Grandmasters tied with 8 points out of a possible 11 at the 1997 British Championships just completed. Michael Adams, John Emms, Tony Miles, and Matthew Sadler were in the top group.

The next group with 7.5 points included GM Mark Hebden, IM Andrew Ledger, FM Krishnan Sashikiran, GM Jon Speelman, and IM Aaron Summerscale, who appears to have made his third GM norm in the event. Andrew Ledger also appears to have a GM norm for the event, but Andrew Martin may have fallen short by a fraction of a percentage point. Ledger has one GM norm (of three needed) so far. Norms must still be submitted and approved by the FIDE Ratings & Titles Committee before titles are awarded.

Rounding out the top 15 were GM Keith Arkell, IM Mark Ferguson, GM Tony Kosten,, IM Luke McShane, IM Johnathan Parker and GM Chris Ward, with 7 points.

In the last round, Kosten, who had been at the front of the pack for several rounds, lost to GM Sadler, jumping Sadler into the top group and leaving Kosten out of the running.

IM Mark Ferguson finished in the top 15 with a variation of the "Swiss Gambit"--after a loss to lower-rated IM Colin Crouch in round 7, he finished with 3 out of the last 4.

The August Issue of CHESS LIFE MAGAZINE

The US Chess Federation publishes Chess Life Magazine every month. Available by subscription or on newsstands.

The August issue of CHESS LIFE now available on newsstands features a memorial for GM Najdorf (1910-1997), profiles of the 1997 Amateur Champions, a report from the Memorial Day Classic in southern California, games from the G/60 Championship, and the Maurice Irvin Chess Festival, including the 1997 US Junior Open, 1997 US Junior Championship, and the national G/10 Championship.

Add to that our novice section, "Your First Move," which features columnists Jeremy Silman, Bruce Pandolfini, Gabriel Schwartzman, and Lev Alburt, and you've got the nucleus of a great issue. The icing on the cake, of course, are our regular columnists: Andy Soltis, Larry Evans, Pal Benko, Robert Byrne, Michael Wilder, Edmar Mednis, Alex Dunne, Robert Lincoln, David L. Brown, and Bjarke Kristensen.
