Grandmaster Arthur Bisguier's Commentary

Black is trying activate his rook in order to generate some counterplay. His idea is to play ... a4 and ... Ra5 to attack the White d-pawn. The drawback of this is that it weakens his queenside pawns. However, playing passively would offer little hope against a player of Karpov's techinical virtuosity.
