3. Ng1-f3 Full Game Score ... Previous Move ... Next Move |
A natural developing move which defends the d4-pawn and controls the e5-square. Another alternative is 3. Nc3, which would have allowed 3. ... Bb4 (the Nimzo-Indian Defense), which threatens to saddle White with double c-pawns. This can be a serious breach of the integrity of White's pawn structure, and creates a dynamic imbalance. This accounts for the great popularity of the Nimzo-Indian Defense. Karpov usually prefers positions with super-sound pawn structures, so he opts to develop his King's Knight. |
