Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

White mobilizes the Rook, defends the Knight on d2, and prepares a possible e4. It is generally a good idea to put a Rook on the same file as the opposing player's Queen. This is the tempo that Karpov conserved on move 13, when he eschewed Rfe1 in favor of Bb2. Despite his lead in the match, Karpov is satisfied that his position is somewhat better, and therefore avoids the possible repetition of position with Qc3. Then, it would have been interesting to see if Kamsky would have varied and played for a win. (1:00)
