Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

White keeps Black's b-pawn from advancing, and stops the maneuver mentioned in the note to Black's 35th move. It makes Ba4 possible in some variations, to tie down Black's Bishop to passive defense of his c-pawn.

Note that the possible exchange of the White light-squared Bishop for the Black Knight, resulting in opposite-colored Bishops would likely result in a draw. Karpov still feels that he is better, since his King is potentially better. (1:53)
