If 5. Nxd5?!, Black can gain additional defensive resources with 5. ... Nxd5 (reducing pieces), and if White continues with 6. Qxd5?! then after ... Nc6, ... d6, ... Be6 Black's activity deflects any pressure from his backward d-pawn, giving him good play.
