Karpov always plays the safest lines (but with a drop of poison). White will have a slight, nagging initiative after this move.

Other choices here are: 11. Nd2 (not 11. Nc3 Nxe4! 12. Nxe4 f5 13. Bg5 Qd7! and Black gains back his piece in a murky position) 11 ... Nxd5 12. Nc4 Nb4 and White seems better but the situation isn't quite as clear. (White's time used 0:07)
