Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

Black might have considered 16. ... Ne5, but after the simple 17. Bxe5 dxe5 18. Bxe4 fxe4, White wouldn't have to rush into winning a pawn with 19. Qxe4 Bf5 (with activity for Black), but could play the calmer 19. Nd2 Qxd5 20. Nxe4 with a safe blockading position for White.

Also possible was 16. ... Ndf6!?.

Gata's move aims for long-term pressure against the b2-pawn (by exchanging the Nc4 defender). (0:54)
