Results Summary. Results from Day Fifteen: Play-Offs for the Quarter Finals
This day saw the final games of the Quarter Finals. Only 4 players will advance out of the original 100. We continue with the two game mini-matches in this round. A score of 1.5 (one win and one draw) advances to the SemiFinals in Round 6. If the two players are tied at the end of the two games, then a play-off sequence takes place the third day of the round. (For information on play-off rules, see the official FIDE site.)
Nine Americans competed in the event. Eight played in Round 1, of whom three advanced into Round 2, and one had an automatic entry into Round 2. All four Americans were eliminated in the second round.
USCF coverage, including GM Rohde's commentary, will continue throughout the event.
J. Polgar was eliminated after she could only achieve a draw with Khalifman. In a game of rapidly shifting fortunes, Shirov (who was seeded #2 at the start of the event), was also elminated when Nisipeanu turned what seemed to be a likely loss into a clear win. The other two games were draws, and those mini-matches went to play-offs on Saturday.
In the play-offs, Akopian scored 1.5 against Movsesian in the first pair of play-off games, and will advance. It took another two games before he knew his opponent for Sunday's Semi-Finals, however. Adams and Kramnik (the #1 seed) drew their first two games. Then, at the slightly faster time control (G/15 with 10 second increment), Adams won the first game with White, giving him draw odds for the second. The second game went back and forth, with Adams having a strong attack that seemed to dissipate, but he was able to regroup and eventually won. So the Semi-Finals match-ups will pair Nisipeanu and Khalifman in one 4-game mini-match, and Adams and Akopian in the other.
Both games each day are available in auto-play format (one diagram per move) with commentary from GM Rohde in our Games Archives. No Java is required to view these games. See the FIDE Official site for additional details.
