Crossville and Cumberland County Bank is host to the 2011 U.S. Cadet Chess
Championship for a third year in a row!
Crossville, TN - The U.S. Cadet
Championship is off. If it is
anything like the last two years, this promises to be a barn burner. The last two years I named the theme of the
tournament, "fighting chess." I expect
the same this year. Players from all over the country arrived in Crossville, the home of the U.S. Chess Federation. They are ready to begin an intense
week of chess--an eight-player round robin tournament.
The
players took part in a catered dinner courtesy of the host of the tournament,
Cumberland County Bank. After the
dinner, they were greeted by local dignitaries beginning with Cumberland
County Mayor Kenneth Carey and City of Crossville Mayor J.H. Graham. Executive Director Bill Hall welcomed the
players as well surprising everyone in the room, and singled out Aleksandr
Ostrovskiy with a certificate awarding him the title of senior master! Ostrovskiy recently tied for first in the strong Under 2400 section at the World Open.
The
players were then asked to choose paperweights for the "drawing of the
lots." They will know who they are
playing for each round and you will too.

Chief
Tournament Director and International Arbiter Walter Brown commented about a
tournament at Thiell College in Pennsylvania and compared the conditions to
the tournament back then to the conditions in Crossville and there really was
no comparison: "This is great! In
Thiell, there was no air conditioning in June and July." Brown remarked.
The
players will be playing on chess sets donated by USCF Sales/House of Staunton
and now they just need for the "bell to ring."
