Last week, FIDE approved the federation transfers of two top
players. The winner of the Millionaire
Chess Open, GM Wesley So, had requested a transfer from his native country, the
Philippines, back in July. The transfer
for Wesley (FIDE rating 2762 and #10 in the World) was approved on October 28th. He is now eligible to participate in FIDE
events under the U.S. flag but cannot represent the U.S. in FIDE events for two
years. GM So, however, may represent us
sooner if the appropriate transfer fee is paid. IM/WGM Nazi Paikidze whose FIDE rating is 2339 requested a transfer from the country of Georgia. Her transfer was approved on October 30th. Nazi was the World U-14 Girl's and World U-16 Girl's Champion. As is the case with Wesley, Nazi is now eligible to participate in FIDE events under the U.S. flag but may not represent the U.S. in FIDE events for two years. Included in the FIDE events in which the 2-year waiting period applies are the 2015 U.S. Championship and the 2015 U.S. Women's Championship as both events are also the Zonal Championships for FIDE Zone 2.1. But, just like Wesley, Nazi will be eligible to represent us sooner if the transfer fee is paid.
