This year's World Open site
The World Open (June 28-July 4) begins today at King of Prussia, PA. Exciting features of this event include an U2400 section and a $30,000 projected grand prize in the Open. Tournament organizer Bill Goichberg says he tried an Under 2400 section in 1988 but it was not successful because too many foreign players went into the U 2400 section, making norms difficult in the Open. Now that more foreign GMs and IMs play in the Open, he predicts no such problems, and is excited to "give 2200-2399 players a chance to play for big money."
The World Open was moved this year because Philadelphia was unavailable due to a city wide convention. Goichberg considers King of Prussia, 20 miles west of Philadelphia (famous for its huge mall), to be "the next best site-some like it better because of the free parking."
