University of Texas at Dallas' A team took first place in the
Pan-American Championships (Dec.27-30, Miami) with 5.5/6 match points. UTD's critical battle was in the penultimate round, against University of Baltimore County (UMBC). UMBC came in with a rating average of 2494, behind UTD A (2535) but ahead of UTD B (2446). In round three, UMBC got a boost with a victory over UTD B, but they were unable to get through UTD A, despite a win from UMBC's GM Sergey Erenburg over GM Alejandro Ramirez. After winning, the entire UTD team celebrated at an Argentinian steak restaraunt by the port. According to UTD student John Bartholomew, they had a great meal, with a buffet that included unlimited steak, pork and lamb.
