US Champion Gata Kamsky captured clear first at the National Open in Las Vegas (June 12-15). After a penultimate victory against GM Alejandro Ramirez, Kamsky entered the last round half a point ahead of the field.

Gata tried to squeeze but could only draw against Lazaro Batista Bruzon of Cuba, which he imagined would be good for just a share of first. Surprisingly, none of seven players who could mathematically catch up to share first with Gata were able to. It was particularly tough for GM Aleks Lenderman to say goodbye to his chances for sharing tournament victory, as he played on in a drawn rook endgame vs. Joel Banawa.
