by NM Alexey Root Committee Chair The Women's Committee chair, Alexey W. Root, is available to answer any questions about women's chess. Her address (surface/email) is: The Women's Committee has the lesson/simultaneous fees for most of the competitors in this year's women's chess championship. Please contact Alexey Root if you would like any of these women to appear in your town. The women make great lecturers, and wonderful role models for female chessplayers in your area. The Women's Committee mission statementThe USCF Women's Chess Committee is dedicated to female chessplayers, especially those over 18 and out of the scholastic committee's realm. The committee seeks to help USCF women members enjoy a great variety of tournaments, and to encourage non-USCF members to try chess in some capacity (non-rated beginner's events, as tournament directors, etc.). To that end, the committee seeks to make all tournaments more responsive to the needs of adult women, i.e. by requesting that organizers provide babysitting referrals, or offer discounts/incentives/modified schedules to encourage the participation of adult women. The committee also recognizes the social nature of chess, and that many women occasionally wish to meet and play against one another in women's only events. The committee seeks to establish and encourage such events. Finally, recognizing the need for role models, the committee continually strives to publicize top women chess players, and insure that their financial rewards are great enough to keep them in chess. ActivitiesThis year the committee, with the help of the Policy Board, established favorable conditions for women's tournaments in every region and state. The Policy Board passed PB 97-29 and PB 97-30. These two motions establish $100 per region annually for Women's and Collegiate Championships and, for state Women's and state Collegiate, six free lines in TLAs as well as no rating fees. Now tournament directors must seize the initiative, and start holding these events. Many women will be encouraged to compete at chess if such women's only tournaments become regional/state annual traditions. Texas will be hosting the first of the USCF-sponsored regional women's chess championships in Denton, April 5, 1998. Look for details in the USCF Tournament Life Online, in Chess Life Magazine, or contact Alexey Root. |
