The field for this year's US Cadet Championship

Going into the last round of this year's nine-round US Cadet Championship in Rockville, MD, the field of 10 had been narrowed to two contenders. John Burke was in first place with 6.5 points and a half point lead over FM Cameron Wheeler.

By a sporting coincidence they were scheduled to play each other in the last round. (In fact, in an even more improbable conincidence, the last round pairings went straight down the standings, 1-2, 3-4 ... 9-10). John had an advantage going into the ending, but Cameron was able to pull out the win to become this year's Cadet Champion, earning a scholarship to University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). John ended up in clear second, and FM Nicolas Checa finished third on tie-breaks over Craig Hilby, both with 5.5.
