 Three rounds of play are in the books at the 2007 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Championship in Miami, FL. The annual event is being ably hosted by Miami Dade College and has attracted 28 teams from Canada, the Caribbean, and the United States. In the mix are four GMs, nine IMs, and a number of national masters. There have been few surprises thus far as perennial powerhouses from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) have cruised to 3 – 0 starts. Stanford University (2223 average) also checks in with a 3 – 0 record after an impressive win over the University of Toronto-A (2272). Away from the board, players have been enjoying all that southern Florida has to offer. The Port of Miami is a stone’s throw away from the tournament site, while the Bayside Marketplace is a popular dining and hang-out spot between rounds. A few ambitious UTD players even ventured out to Key West prior to the first round. Saturday could be considered “moving day” as UMBC-A (2494) takes on UTD-B (2446), while UTD-A (2535) will face the energetic Stanford squad.
