Results from Day One: Game 1 of the 7 Game Preliminaries
This day saw the first game of the Preliminaries. The players have been divided into 2 groups of 8. Each group will play a round robin of 7 games. The top two scorers from each group will advance to the SemiFinals.
Absolute Championship: In Group A, GM Gulko, playing one of the longest games of the round, also won with a very interesting endgame against GM Shabalov. (See the Commentary Section for the archive of the Gulko - Shabalov game.) GM Alexander Ivanov also scored a full point against GM Kaidanov. GM Gurevich and GM Yermolinsky drew.
In Group B, defending Champion Nick de Firmian scored with a win against GM Roman Dzindzichashvili. IM Finegold drew with GM Seirawan. GM Fedorowicz drew with IM Shliperman, the 1998 US Junior Champion. Christiansen defeated Kudrin. GM Serper defeated GM Benjamin for the third decisive game in this group.
Women's Championship: USCF Scholastic Director Beatriz Marinello defeated Anna Khan. Sagalchik beat Burtman. Belakovskaia defeated Groberman. Shahade and Epstein scored the only draw in this round. Airapetian defeated Frenklakh.
