Results from Day Two: Game 2 of the 7 Game Preliminaries

Round 2 Bulletin with Games Now Online!

This day saw the second game of the Preliminaries. The players have been divided into 2 groups of 8. Each group will play a round robin of 7 games. The top two scorers from each group will advance to the SemiFinals.

Results of Game 2

Absolute Championship: In Group A, By the luck of the draw, the two players with victories from round 1, GM Christiansen and GM Gulko, faced off. Christiansen won that game, to earn the only perfect score in the section. GM Gurevich and GM Fedorowicz drew, as did GM Yermolinsky and GM Kudrin. The 1998 Junior Champion, IM Shliperman, scored his second draw of the event against GM Shabalov. (See the Commentary Section for the archive of the Gurevich - Fedorowicz game.)

In Group B, defending Champion Nick de Firmian's game against GM Ivanov was still underway at the time of this posting. GM Serper scored a full point against IM Finegold. GM Dzindzichshvili drew with GM Benjamin. GM Seirawan and GM Kaidanov also drew their game. (See the Commentary Section for the archive of the Seirawan - Kaidanov game.)

Women's Championship: Marinello defeated Frenklakh, and Sagalchik beat Airapetian. Both have perfect scores. Groberman also scored a full point against Burtman. Epstein lost to Khan. Jen Shahade scored a draw in an 83 move game against Belakovskaia.

Absolute Championship in Two Preliminary Groups

This event is the Absolute championship, and is open to all players without restriction on geography, age, or gender. Players are invited based on rating and or performance in specific events like the US Junior Championship. Players are divided into two groups, and play a preliminary round robin. The two top-scoring players from each group go on to the SemiFinals. The eventual winner earns the title of 1999 US Champion. Ratings shown below are from the July 1999 FIDE list.

The Women's Championship

This separate, gender-restricted event, is open to women only, and is intended to promote the participation of women in tournament chess. There is a single section of 10 players. The highest scoring player earns the title of "1999 US Women's Champion". Ratings shown below are from the July 1999 FIDE list.
