Absolute Championships, Day 5

The players have been divided into 2 groups of 8. Each group will play a round robin of 7 games. The top two scorers from each group will advance to the SemiFinals. This day saw the fifth game of the Preliminaries.

What a difference a day makes! Instead of 4 players at the top of each section, we now have only one. In Group A, Junior Champion Igor Shliperman finally lost a game, to the top-seeded player in this section, Boris Gulko. This knocks the 19 year old out of the leader group. Kudrin and Gurevich drew, as did Yermolinsky and Shabalov. John Fedorowicz scored his first win, against Larry Christiansen. This leaves Gulko half a point ahead of the field with 2 games left to play in the Preliminaries.

In Group B, Kaidanov defeated Finegold. de Firmian and Benjamin drew, as did Seirawan and Dzindzichashvili. Ivanov lost to Serper when his flag fell. This leads serve in sole lead in this group.

Women's Championships, Day 6

In what would have to be seen as an upset, #10 seed Airapetian defeated former US Women's Champion Esther Epstein. Jen Shahade also scored a full point against Olgar Sagalchik. Groberman drew with Marinello, and Frenklakh drew with Khan. Meanwhile, Belakovskaia moved into sole possession of first by defeating Burtman.
