Absolute Championship Group A Preliminaries (7 Game Round-Robin)

Top 2 will advance to SemiFinals. Gulko and Yermolinsky advance.

Absolute Championship Group B Preliminaries (7 Game Round-Robin)

Top 2 will advance to SemiFinals. Serper advances. A playoff will be held Tuesday between the players with 4.0 to determine the other SemiFinalist from Group B.

Separate Women's Championship (9 Game Round-Robin)

Results

The players have been divided into 2 groups of 8. Each group will play a round robin of 7 games. The top two scorers from each group will advance to the SemiFinals. This day saw the last regulation game of the Preliminaries.

Gulko finished up with a bang, defeating Kudrin to lead the section with 5.5 and advance to the SemiFinals. Fedorowicz drew with Shabalov. Yermolinsky also drew with Shliperman. Although Shliperman, the 1998 US Junior Champion, does not advance to the Semis, he had an excellent result, finishing with 3.0 in this very strong group. Christiansen lost to Gurevich. Yermolinsky will play Serper in one SemiFinals match. Gulko's challenger will be determined by a Tuesday playoff (See the Group B results).

In Group B, Serper drew with Dzindzichashvili, which was enough to qualify Serper for the Semis. Seirawan drew with Benjamin, while Ivanov defeated Finegold. The defending champion, Nick de Firmian, defeated Kudrin in the last round, but it was not enough to move him into play-off position and both were eliminated. So Serper will advance to the SemiFinals and play Yermolinsky in one SemiFinal match. Benjamin, Ivanov, and Seirawan will be in a playoff on Tuesday to determine Gulko's SemiFinals challenger.

Women's Championships, Day 8

The Women's Championship has only one more round to go. Groberman lost to Khan. Airapetian defeated Burtman. Frenklakh drew with Belakovskaia, as did Sagalchik and Epstein. Marinello also drew with Shahade. That leaves Belakovskaia a full point up on the field going into the last round, guaranteeing her at least a tie for first.

Crosstables

Absolute Championship in Two Preliminary Groups

This event is the Absolute championship, and is open to all players without restriction on geography, age, or gender. Players are invited based on rating or performance in specific events like the US Junior Championship. Players are divided into two groups, and play a preliminary round robin. The two top-scoring players from each group go on to the SemiFinals. The eventual winner earns the title of 1999 US Champion. Ratings shown below are from the July 1999 FIDE list.

The Women's Championship

This separate, gender-restricted event, is open to women only, and is intended to promote the participation of women in tournament chess. There is a single section of 10 players. The highest scoring player earns the title of "1999 US Women's Champion". Ratings shown below are from the July 1999 FIDE list.
