SemiFinals, Play-offs

This event is the Absolute championship, and is open to all players without restriction on geography, age, or gender. Players were invited based on rating or performance in specific events like the US Junior Championship. Players were divided into two groups, and played a preliminary round robin. The two top-scoring players from each group qualified for the SemiFinals. The eventual winner earns the title of 1999 US Champion. Ratings shown are from the July 1999 FIDE list.

There are two SemiFinals matches. Each match will last four games. The pairings are Gulko - Seirawan and Serper - Yermolinsky. The top scorer from each match will advance to the Finals.

In the playoffs phase of the Semis, Gulko and Seirawan reached a very complex position in which Seirawan was short on time. They agreed to a draw, and went to Quick Chess playoffs on Monday. Serper and Yermolinsky also drew, and also went to playoffs Monday.

On Monday, Serper won both games at the G/25 time control, and advances to the Finals. Gulko and Seirawan drew the first two games at G/25. The third game, at G/15, was also drawn. Gulko then won the 4th game to take the match and advance to the Finals. Games with commentary are available in the Archive section.
