1999 INTERPLAY US CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Finals

Players were invited based on rating or performance in specific events like the US Junior Championship. Players were divided into two groups, and played a preliminary round robin. The two top-scoring players from each group qualified for the SemiFinals. The eventual winner earns the title of 1999 US Champion. Ratings shown are from the July 1999 FIDE list. In the second game of the Finals, Gulko, who had White, scored again to go ahead in the match 2 - 0. He now needs only one draw out of the next two games to clinch the title.
