1999 INTERPLAY US CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Finals: Gulko Wins!

Players were invited based on rating or performance in specific events like the US Junior Championship. Players were divided into two groups, and played a preliminary round robin. The two top-scoring players from each group qualified for the SemiFinals. The eventual winner earns the title of 1999 US Champion. Ratings shown are from the July 1999 FIDE list. In the third game of the Finals, Gulko played simply and solidly, earning the draw he needed to take the match and the title 2.5 - 0.5. Game with commentary is available in the Archive section.
